KALIBO, Aklan – Poverty incidence among Aklanons in 2015 declined to 14.9 percent from 25.0 percent in 2012 and 44.7 percent in 2009, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Aklan.

Poverty incidence is the proportion of people below the poverty line, Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet Catubuan said.

Subsistence incidence (proportion of Aklanons in extreme poverty) also dropped to 0.9 percent in 2015 from 5.3 percent in 2012.

Among Aklanon families, poverty incidence was estimated at 10.9 percent, down 47 percent from the 20.4 percent in 2012.

Subsistence incidence among families, on the other hand, was pegged at 0.6 percent, down 88 percent from the 4.7 percent in 2012.

NEEDS AND INCOME

Food threshold — the minimum amount needed to meet a person’s basic food needs — was estimated at P14,934, or P1,245 per month or P41 per day.

This means that a family of five needs at least P6,223 a month to meet their basic food needs, the PSA said.

Meanwhile the annual per capita poverty threshold — the minimum income required to meet the basic food and nonfood needs — was estimated at P21,387.

This means that a family of five needs to earn at least P8,911 a month to meet their basic food and nonfood needs.

Both the monthly food threshold and monthly poverty threshold increased 20.8 percent between 2012 and 2015.

In 2015, incomes of poor families were short by 10.5 percent of the poverty threshold, which means that, on the average, an additional monthly income of P936 is needed by a poor family of five to move out of poverty, the PSA said.

Data were derived from the results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey, which the PSA conducts every three years. (With PSA-Aklan/PN)
