BORACAY – The Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) has started fixing power lines to restore electricity across the province in the aftermath of typhoon “Ursula.”
Engr. Joel Martinez, assistant general manager of Akelco, said Task Force Kapatid-Ursula has mobilized linemen from various electric cooperatives to complete the power-restoration works in Ursula-hit areas in Aklan.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Dec. 28, around 14 towers and 59-transmission structures were toppled by the typhoon.
As of 11 a.m. on Dec. 29, the typhoon recorded damages to around 80,400 households, affecting over 420,000 individuals or 94,000 families. The towns of Ibajay, Kalibo, Numancia, and New Washington were among the worst affected areas with at least 5 persons dead.
The typhoon has also ravaged around P178 million worth of rice fields and farms, according to Aklan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The Department of Education is also monitoring damages to infrastructures from schools across the province while the NGCP, the Department of Social Welfare and Development and other humanitarian agencies have stepped-up relief efforts with food, water and other supplies to those who were in need.
Following the power outage, restaurants and convenient stores in Kalibo, Aklan were forced to suspend their operations while hundreds of motorists and residents lined up in gasoline stations to get fuel for their cars.(With a report from Akean Forum/PN)
