MANILA – The Alaska Aces squandered a 15 point lead before hanging on to a 105-102 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 2017 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Reinforcement Cory Jefferson led the way with double-double 41 points and 13 rebounds for the Aces, which tied the Meralco Bolts on top of the standings with a 4-0 win-loss slate.

After seeing its 15-point third quarter lead fizzle up and trailing 97-93 late in the match, the Aces leaned on back-to-back three pointers by Jefferson to surge ahead, 103-99.

The Painters cut the deficit to 103-102 on a triple by Shawn Taggart but the Aces increased it to three on free throws by Jvee Casio. The Painters had a chance to force an overtime but Mike Tolomia misfired his triple.

Taggart top-scored with double-double 40 points and 14 rebounds for the Painters, which suffered its second straight loss after winning the first three games.

Meanwhile, The Phoenix Fuel Masters got back on the winning track with a 94-91 escape over the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gym in Davao City.

Matthew Wright bounced back from a scoreless conference debut with a career-high 27 points to lead the way for the Fuel Masters, which snapped a two-game slide to improve to a 2-2 win-loss slate.

Down 91-90 with 18 seconds left in the game, Jameel McKay scored on a putback to put the Fuel Masters on top, 92-91. Wright then drained two free throws to extend the lead to three with seven seconds remaining.

The Kings had a chance to force overtime but a swarming defense by the Fuel Masters in the final seconds of the game prevented the former from launching a decent shot./PN
