MANILA — Alexandra Eala’s bid for a quarterfinal berth at the Ningbo Open came crashing down as sixth-seeded Russian Diana Schnaider capitalized on the Filipina tennis star’s service vulnerabilities to secure a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the Round of 16 of the WTA 500 tournament in China on Thursday.

Schnaider converted six of her 13 break-point opportunities and dominated the crucial exchanges to derail Eala’s attempt to build momentum following her impressive opening-round victory over France’s Diane Parry.

The Russian outscored Eala, 83-74, in total points, exploiting the Filipina’s inconsistent service game while maintaining greater control during critical stretches of the straight-sets encounter.

Eala, however, refused to go down without a fight, converting four of her eight break-point chances and repeatedly challenging her higher-seeded opponent before ultimately falling short.

Schnaider held a narrow advantage in receiving points, 39-36, but established a more decisive edge in service points, 44-38, underscoring the difference in their ability to protect their serves.

The Russian also landed an impressive 79 percent of her first serves, significantly higher than Eala’s 61 percent, allowing her to dictate more rallies and maintain pressure on the Filipina.

Eala won only 52 percent of points behind her first serve and 48 percent on her second delivery, while Schnaider registered a stronger 63-percent success rate on first-serve points despite winning just 29 percent on her second serve.

The Filipina recorded one ace and one double fault, compared with Schnaider’s three double faults and no aces.

Schnaider also captured seven service games against Eala’s five, demonstrating her ability to seize opportunities and preserve her advantage in the tightly contested encounter.

The defeat abruptly ended Eala’s hopes of reaching the tournament’s last eight after her commanding first-round triumph over Parry had snapped a string of disappointing results.

Before arriving in Ningbo, Eala had struggled to regain her winning form following her semifinal exit at the Asian Games and a second-round defeat at the Wuhan Open.

Despite the setback, the 21-year-old Filipina showed competitive resilience against a seeded opponent, although her inability to consistently hold serve and convert crucial points ultimately proved costly.

Schnaider, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals, keeping her title aspirations alive in the prestigious WTA 500 event./PN
