ILOILO — An algal bloom that suddenly appeared along the coastlines of three barangays in Miag-ao town has left 86 residents suffering from respiratory and irritation-related symptoms, prompting local authorities to issue a health advisory, mobilize emergency responders, and launch an intensive coastal cleanup operation.
The algal bloom was observed Tuesday, June 23, in the coastal barangays of Sapa, Mambatad, and Narat-an, where dozens of residents experienced symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including irritation of the nose and throat, sneezing, runny nose, coughing, chest tightness, and breathing discomfort.
The incident prompted Mayor Richard Garin to convene an emergency meeting with officials from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Municipal Health Office, Office of the Municipal Agriculturist, and the Information Office to coordinate immediate response measures and public safety interventions.
As part of the town government’s emergency response, an intensive coastal cleanup was conducted Wednesday in the affected barangays.
The cleanup operation was led by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in partnership with the Philippine Army, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, and barangay officials.
It remains unclear what caused the sudden algal bloom.
Authorities instructed all volunteers participating in the cleanup to avoid direct skin contact with the algae and to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize health risks.
The municipal government also issued a coastal health advisory warning residents, fishermen, beachgoers, and visitors to exercise caution in affected coastal areas.
According to the advisory, some algal blooms can release toxins or airborne irritants that may affect human health, particularly when sea spray carries the particles inland.
Authorities said the bloom could remain in coastal waters for several days or even weeks depending on weather conditions, water currents, and other environmental factors.
Health officials warned that people exposed near affected shorelines may experience irritation of the nose and throat, sneezing, runny nose, coughing, watery eyes, shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness.
The advisory emphasized that individuals with asthma, chronic respiratory illnesses, weakened immune systems, young children, and senior citizens are particularly vulnerable and should take extra precautions.
Residents were advised to:
* avoid areas where discolored water, foam, or dead fish are present;
* limit time spent near affected shorelines if symptoms develop;
* keep windows closed when strong onshore winds carry sea spray;
* wear respiratory protection when exposure cannot be avoided; and
* refrain from swimming or consuming seafood from affected waters unless authorities declare them safe.
Health officials also urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe breathing difficulties, persistent coughing, or worsening respiratory symptoms./PN
