ILOILO City – The second place finish of Manggahan Festival at the Aliwan Fiesta on Saturday was a big boost to Guimaras, according to the island province’s tourism office.

The win came just as Guimaras was preparing for its annual festival celebrating its world-renowned sweet mangoes (locally called mangga) and the 25th anniversary of its provincehood on May 11 to 22.

Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan represented Manggahan Festival of Guimaras in the Aliwan – the annual battle of the country’s best cultural festivals held in Pasay City, Metro Manila.

Manggahan was also the champion of the 2017 Dinagyang Festival’s Kasadyahan competition just this January.

“We are very lucky. We are winning, sunod- sunod gid. We deserve to be known na gid,” said Guimaras tourism officer Liberty Ferrer.

For winning second place in Aliwan, Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan took home half a million pesos as cash prize.

“Happy gid kami. First time sang Guimaras mag intra and nag-second place kita dayun. We successfully promoted the province,” said Ferrer.

Guimaras had a 350-strong contingent to the Aliwan (teachers, drummers, propmen, and student dancers).

The provincial government allotted P5 million for the Aliwan contest. It also secured a P500,000  from the Department of Tourism 6 and other sponsors such as the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc., Trans-Asia Phinma Company, and Guimaras resorts./PN
