Angela Bermejo snags gold in nat’l age group taekwondo

MANILA – Angela Joy Bermejo of Iloilo achieved another accomplishment in her young taekwondo career after ruling her event in the 2018 National Age Group Taekwondo Championships at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The 14-year-old Bermejo, a standout of St. Robert’s International Academy, captured the gold medal in the juniors division finweight category on Sunday after sweeping all her three matches.

A native of Miagao town, Bermejo started her campaign by beating Katrina Cacero in the first round before following it up with a victory over Jasmin Kaye Maoirat in the semifinals.

Bermejo completed her dominance by defeating Eirenne Lumasang in the final round.

Head coach Denmark Pinggol said the gold medal can be considered a huge achievement for Bermejo after competing in a category higher than her current age.

“She continues to amaze me,” Pinggol told Panay News. “Kasi sa age niyang 4 (years old), pang cadet division pa lang talaga dapat siya. But she did more than that kasi nakapag-gold medal siya sa juniors division.”

Bermejo’s medal was one of the five major medals she bagged so far this year.

She also won golds in the 2018 Smart MVP Best of the Best, the 2018 National Inter-School tournament, the 2018 National CPJ tournament, and the 5th Women’s Martial Arts Festival./PN
