SAN JOSE, Antique – Health officials may declare Antique malaria-free if three barangays in Caluya town continue to have no case of the disease.
Barangays Semirara, Alegria and Tinugbok were monitored to have malaria in 2010.
They may be declared malaria-free if no more cases get reported this year, said Provincial Health Officer Ric Noel Naciongayo.
“We have to wait for a number of years before the DOH (Department of Health) could declare (any area) malaria-free,” Naciongayo said.
Consequently the entire province may be declared malaria-free as well, according to Dr. Rene Feman Autajay, DOH representative to Antique.
“Malaria cases in Antique come only from these barangays,” Autajay said.
Both officials said the Health department is working hard to maintain zero malaria cases in the three Caluya barangays.
They are conducting intensive advocacy and monitoring of cases, consider their proximity to Mindoro, which has an endemic malaria problem, said Autajay. (PNA)
