ANTIQUE — The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has called on resort owners to strengthen safety and security protocols as the summer season begins.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Officer Broderick Train emphasized that a surge of tourists is expected in resorts, beaches, eco-tourism sites, and vacation houses, making it essential to ensure that safety measures are in place.
“Due to Holy Week and long weekends, people are expected to witness and participate in religious rites and rituals. Thus, local DRRM units, including barangays, must be fully prepared,” Train said.
He added that key areas requiring close monitoring include churches — particularly those designated for Visita Iglesia, as well as re-enactment sites of the Passion of Christ and major thoroughfares used for religious processions.
The summer safety program also covers tourism establishments in anticipation of increased visitor arrivals.
Mae Ritz Ebro of the Provincial Tourism Office (PTO) reported that the office has developed summer safety guidelines for all resort owners to ensure visitors have a safe and memorable stay in the province.
Meanwhile, Coast Guard Station San Jose Lieutenant Junior Grade Sheena Mae Claud emphasized during a press conference, the importance of compliance with lifeguard requirements to prevent drowning incidents, noting that cases were reported last year.
For resorts with pools and beachfronts, owners are required to designate water safety officers during peak hours and install proper signage and clearly marked swimming zones.
For mountain, river, and eco-tourism activities, all organized treks must be accompanied by accredited local guides. These activities should also include proper pre-activity safety briefings, particularly for river tubing, waterfall trekking, mountain hiking, and trail running.
Tourism establishments are likewise reminded to uphold environmental safety measures, such as enforcing “No Littering” policies, providing visible waste segregation bins, and prohibiting coral collection and wildlife disturbance.
Ebro highlighted that Antique is known for its natural beauty, warm communities, and peaceful landscapes. She noted that the influx of tourists will benefit not only tourism establishments but also local entrepreneurs, producers, and communities.
According to the PTO, Antique recorded approximately 2,305,735 tourist arrivals (same-day visitors) last year, with 189,103 overnight stays in tourism establishments.
