SAN JOSE, Antique – Some 3,358 young athletes and delegates from all over the region flocked to the province on Sunday to formally open the 2017 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet at the Binirayan Sports Complex.

Department of Education VI information officer Leah Belleza explains that of the over three thousand WVRAA participants, 1,915 are competing athletes, 760 are coaches, 568 are officiating officials, and the remaining 115 are non-officiating officials.

Iloilo, the defending overall champion with 425 amassed medals last year, has one of the largest delegations with 640 athletes and coaches, 48 trainers and 130 officials, for a total of 818.

The regional meet opened with a Grand Foot Parade at the Binirayan Sports Complex joined by all five competing provinces, namely Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and WVRAA host Antique.

Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Reynaldo Gico thanked all stakeholders for the successful kickoff of the annual meet, highlighting that Antique will also be hosting the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in April 23-29.

“We are honored to have been chosen again as the host of this celebrated regional sports competition. This will usher the hosting of the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in this beautiful province with humble and happy people,” said Gico.

The 2017 WVRAA is slated from Feb. 5 to 11. Games officially start today in various venues across Antique, some outside San Jose, since rehabilitation on the Binirayan Sports Complex did not finish on time for the regional competition.

The Athletics and Taekwondo contests are set to be held at the Pis-anan Ground Oval and Pis-anan Covered Gymn, respectively, both in Sibalom, Antique.

Aside from the sports events regularly played during WVRAA there will also be demonstrations of new sports events such as Pencak Silat, Dance Sports and Aero Gymnastics.

WVRAA has 15 events in the Elementary Level, 21 for the Secondary Category and 4 events in the Paralympic Games./PN
