ILOILO City – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged those planning to run in May’s synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to be transparent with their qualifications.
DILG is supportive of the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections’ (NAMFREL) call for the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to make it as requirement for the candidates the submission of their curriculum vitae (CV) to the poll body, said DILG assistant secretary Jonathan Malaya.
“We are not imposing a new requirement. We are just asking them to be transparent about their qualifications. I don’t think it violates any constitutional requirement,” said Malaya who was in Iloilo City yesterday.
CVs can help voters become more judicious, explained Malaya, the DILG assistant secretary for Capacity Development, Public Affairs and Communication.
Candidates must be “matino, mahusay at maasahan (upright, capable and dependable),” he stressed.
Malaya, however, clarified that the submission of CVs is something that Comelec, not DILG, would have to decide on.
“We are hopeful that Comelec will issue a resolution requiring candidates to submit their CVs,” he said.
The barangay and SK elections will be on May 14.
Comelec will be accepting certificates of candidacy between April 14 and April 20.
The campaign period is from May 2 to May 12./PN
