ILOILO City – Another fire gutted a residence in this city, this time killing one.

The house of the Angkay family in Barangay Quezon, Arevalo district, was in flames around 2 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30.

Arvin Angkay, 50, died.

According to the wife, Abby, 38, she was still able to bring their three-year-old son safely out before the fire got bigger.

Jeric Chuansieng, a classmate of the fatality who also served as the family’s spokesperson, believed Arvin may have died of suffocation after going back inside to save some valuable documents.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Rodel T. Yanger told Panay News that the fire started in the room of the couple.

Naka-receive kami sang tawag nga may sunog diri 2:44 sang kaaganhon. So sa kwarto gid ni nila nag-umpisa ang sunog,” said Yanger.

Based on the initial estimates of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire left P394,800 worth of damages.

Police personnel and the Scene of the Crime Operatives also conducted an investigation.

Meanwhile, the family signed a waiver to have the victim’s body undergo an autopsy examination.
