ASEAN PARA GAMES; Negrense Severino scoops 2 more chess gold medals in ASEAN Para Games

MANILA – Negrense FIDE Master Sander Severino took home two more gold medals in the men’s chess competition of the 11th ASEAN Para Games late Thursday at the Lo-rin Hotel in Solo, Indonesia.

The Silay City, Negros Occidental native nabbed his third gold by ruled the men’s physically impaired (PI) Individual event with fellow Filipino Jasper Rom finishing with silver.

Severino topped the event with his unbeaten record in all six rounds, tallying five points from four wins and two draws. Rom settled for a silver medal finish with his 4.5 points.

Severino, Tom and Henry Lopez then captured the team gold for the Negrense’s fourth gold medal in the competition after previously topping the men’s individual and team P1 events.

The men’s Para Chess team of Darry Bernardo, Menandro Redor and Israel Peligro, meanwhile, emerged with silver in the Men’s Rapid Team B2, while Bernardo also got a bronze in the individual B2 event.

The women’s Para Chess team of Corazon Lucero, Theresa Bilog and Charmaine Tonic, on the other hand, captured another bronze medal in the Para Chess Women’s Rapid B2 Team event.

Swimmer Angela Otom, meanwhile, captured her third gold medal in ASEAN Para Games in the women’s 50-meter butterfly S5 event in 48.070 seconds, nearly eight seconds faster than the 17-year-old mark of 56.80 set in 2005.

Ernie Gawilan scooped up his second gold in the men’s 200-meter individual medley SM7 in record-breaking fashion as well in 2:49.530, while rookie Marco Tinamisan ruled the men’s 50-meter freestyle S3 event in 54.660 seconds. 

Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan also secured his second gold in ruling the men’s 400-meter T5 race in 1:06.20 while teammate Rodrigo Potiotan Jr. finished third but did not get a medal since there were only three entries in the event.

Finishing with silver medals were Gary Bejino in men’s 50m butterfly S6 event, Ma. Ravinia Carpena in Women’s Shot Put F20 event, the duo of Russel Cundangan and Mary Ann Taguinod in judo and Adeline Dumapong Ancheta in powerlifting.

Nikki Vidal, meanwhile, settled for a bronze medal finish in the Para powerlifting Women’s over 86 kg event, while Mary Eloise Sable also ended up with a bronze medal in table tennis./PN
