MANILA – Alwin Alday came up with clutch hits in overtime as AllStar Bacolod Ballers BingoPlus ousted AFP-FSD Makati Cavaliers, 83-78, in the 2022 Filbasket Summer Championship quarterfinals on Monday at the San Jose del Monte City Sports Complex.
Alday surged the Ballers ahead at 77-76 in the extension period with a split free throw before converting back-to-back baskets to widen the lead to 81-76 with 43 seconds left.
Jake Diwa pulled the Cavaliers to within 78-81 with 29 ticks left before Negrense forward Mark Yee sealed the victory and the semifinals seat for the Ballers with two freebies.
Alday finished the match with 12 points, with five coming in the extra period, while Yee contributed double-double 22 points and 15 rebounds for Bacolod.
Richard Albo fired three outside conversions to end up with 16 points, while Joel Lee Yu and Kraniel Villoria added nine markers apiece for Bacolod, which will battle Nueva Ecija in Game 1 of best-of-three semifinals tonight.
The Ballers opened the game with an 18-6 count behind conversions from Villoria and Yee. The Cavaliers answered with a mini run, capped by three free throws by Rence Alcoriza for a 15-23 score.
AFP-FSP continued its run in the second quarter to take a 24-23 lead on a three-pointer by Alcoriza. Two more outside hits from Jopher Custodio allowed the Cavaliers to build a 41-35 edge.
The Ballers opened the second half strong with baskets from Alday and Jboy Solis to tie the count at 52-all before pulling away to 57-52 on five straight points by Albo.
Bacolod traded hits with AFP-FSP to start the fourth for a 71-64 lead on baskets by Albo, Lee Yu and Yee. The Cavaliers were quick to respond to take a 75-73 lead but a late basket by Alday send the match into overtime.
Jan Dominic Formento finished the game with 21 points, while Jan Angelo Cani and Alcoriza added 16 and 13 markers, respectively, for the eliminated Cavaliers.
