DUMAGUETE City – As the conclusion of the 2017 Palarong Negros Island Region (NIR) meet looms, the Bacolod City delegation has seized a tight hold on the top spot in the partial overall standings with 256 medals – on 123 gold, 68 silver and 65 bronze finishes as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Palarong NIR host Dumaguete welcomed some 12,000 student-athletes, coaches, technical officials and delegation heads from 16 school divisions in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental on Feb. 24, as festivities and contention kicked off to the tune of “One Island, One DepEd, One ASEAN”.
Negros Occidental follows behind Bacolod at a distant 2nd place in the overall tally with 177 medals (65 gold, 65 silver, 47 bronze) as host Dumaguete sits at 3rd place with 89 (20 gold, 28 silver, 41 bronze).
Meanwhile, underdog Dumaguete cagers are mounting a stunning home-court rally in the boy’s secondary level with a 88-78 drubbing of Bacolod City’s titans on Monday, en route to the semifinals.
Their elementary counterparts proved even more formidable after handing an embarrassing lopsided 95-27 loss to Tanjay City on Tuesday at the St. Louis School – Don Bosco gymnasium. With the victory Dumaguete has booked a finals clash with Negros Occidental in the boy’s elementary basketball event.
Sixteen school divisions are clawing for a spot to represent the region in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa set to be held in Antique on April.
The competing divisions are: Bacolod City, Bago City, Silay City, Sagay City, Cadiz City, Escalante City, San Carlos City, La Carlota City, Kabankalan City, Bais City, Tanjay City, Bayawan City, Guilhulngan City, provinces of Negros Occidental, and hosts Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental province.
Athletes are competing in 22 sports events in various venues around Dumaguete, including the campuses of Silliman University, Foundation University and St. Louis School – Don Bosco./PN
