BACOLOD City – This city has two acting mayors for the week following the travel abroad of Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez.
Memorandum No. 078, dated April 8 and issued by Benitez, designates Councilor Israel Salanga as acting mayor effective April 11 and 12.
Benitez said that under Section 46(a) of the Local Government Code of 1991, Salanga is to exercise the powers and perform the duties and functions of the local chief executive during the period.
But except for the power to appoint, suspend, or dismiss employees, Benitez added.
This is the third time that Salanga has been designated to the said position. The first was in September of 2023, then in December of the same year.
Salanga is the No. 2 councilor of Bacolod.
Meanwhile, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran is in Mindanao to attend the Vice Mayors’ League during the period of the councilor’s designation.
Familiaran told this paper that he is to assume the position of acting mayor effective Saturday, April 13, until April 15.
Benitez is known as the most traveled local chief executive in Negros Occidental./PN
