Bacolod local opposes city’s P1.7B loan request

BACOLOD City – A resident of Barangay Villamonte claimed he was the one who sent the Department of Finance (DOF) a letter opposing the city government’s application for a P1.7-billion loan.

Edgar Cadagat said he sent the letter to DOF secretary Carlos Dominguez on June 4.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia “should not be entrusted with millions of pesos [of] public funds which he will just divest the public [of],” read part of Cadagat’s letter.

The city government applied for the loan to fund flagship projects under the Leonardia administration.

These include the development of the Progreso Village Relocation Site (P350 million) and the Bacolod City College (P350 million), construction of the Bacolod MassKara Coliseum (P800 million), and several road and bridge developments (P200 million).

“I sincerely support President Rodrigo Duterte’s effort to stimulate more jobs and ultimately compound production and stir economic activities. However, I take exception for some public spending which by nature are excessive, overpriced and anomalous…” said Cadagat.

He added that this “public spending” is used by politicians to “make money.”

Leonardia on Tuesday called the letter a form of “sabotage.”

He said the projects which will be funded should the loan be approved will be for the betterment of the city.

The mayor did not reveal the identity of the letter sender but said the person plans to run in the 2019 midterm elections.

Leonardia, however, was not certain if for what position.

“Hulaton ta lang ang tion mag-abot ang pamulitika kag dira kita makampanya kag mamulitika,” said the mayor.

“Sa subong kuntani naga-apelar gid ako sa ini nga masyado ka ambisyoso nga hulata lang ang tiyempo, maabot gid na ang election,” he added./PN
