BACOLOD City – The city government here is planning to establish an animal cemetery and crematorium in Barangay Felisa.

Dr. John Michael Cabuguason, assistant city veterinarian, was tasked by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez to make a study on this and submit a proposal to him.

The City Veterinary Office (CVO) last week already conducted a site inspection so that they can start working on the plan.

The city mayor said they are now waiting for the final concept of the project before moving forward with it.

Earlier, the City Engineering Office (CEO) presented to the media the proposed plan for an animal shelter to be constructed at 1.6-hectare lot in Barangay Granada beginning April this year.

The city government earmarked P10 million from its P4.1-billion loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) for the shelter.

Mayor Benitez said with the completion of the animal shelter facility, the CVO will intensify efforts to address the issue of stray dogs in various barangays.

At present, the dogs and cats rescued by the CVO were brought to the dog pound in Barangay 35.

Cabuguason said once the city already has the animal shelter, rescued dogs not claimed by the owners after three days at the dog pound will be transferred to the shelter./PN
