BACOLOD City — The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) here has called on the national government to fast-track the development of renewable energy programs, citing the growing burden of rising fuel prices on consumers and the local economy.
The appeal was made through a resolution authored by Councilor Atty. Caesar Distrito, urging agencies such as the Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate the rollout of alternative energy sources.
Distrito said the country’s heavy reliance on imported oil leaves it vulnerable to global price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions that disrupt fuel supply.
“Fuel price volatility directly impacts daily life—from transportation costs to food prices. This is a systemic issue that demands long-term solutions,” he said.
The resolution pushes for expanded investments in renewable energy, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass, as part of a broader strategy to ensure energy security and economic stability.
Distrito noted that Bacolod City and Negros Occidental are well-positioned to support this transition, particularly in solar power and biomass energy sourced from the province’s sugar industry.
“Renewable energy is not just about sustainability—it is about protecting Filipino families from the recurring burden of rising fuel costs,” he added.
The measure also calls for stronger government incentives, funding support, and policy reforms to attract investments in renewable energy projects, especially in high-potential areas like Negros Occidental.
