BACOLOD City — The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) has approved a resolution urging all telecommunication companies (telcos) to immediately clean up and properly manage spaghetti wires, low-hanging cables, and abandoned or leaning posts across the city.
Authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito, the measure calls on telcos to conduct city-wide inspections, remove unused or abandoned cables, fix tangled wiring, elevate or tighten hanging lines, and replace or reinforce unstable posts.
The resolution also directs telcos to coordinate with the city government — through the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO), and City Engineering Office (CEO) — to ensure orderly, safe, and well-supervised clearing operations.
Distrito said the move responds to increasing complaints from barangays regarding hazardous and disorganized cable installations that pose risks to motorists and pedestrians, obstruct emergency operations, and contribute to urban blight.
“These unsafe and unsightly wires are real hazards to our people. We are calling on all telcos to act immediately and work closely with the city government to eliminate these risks,” he stressed.
The SP likewise requested the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to monitor compliance and ensure adherence to national safety standards. Barangay officials are encouraged to help identify areas with dangerous cable conditions.
Telecommunication companies are required to submit a report to the SP detailing their cleanup activities and maintenance plans.
“This is about protecting public safety and ensuring cleaner, more orderly streets for our residents,” Distrito added.
Many telco wires and posts in Bacolod were reportedly damaged following the onslaught of Typhoon “Tino” last November 4, prompting renewed calls for immediate corrective action./PN
