BACOLOD City – This capital city has been chosen to host the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2017 to be held on June 26.

Richard Nessia, coordinator of the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of Bacolod, said it will be the first time that the event will be held outside Luzon since 1987.

He added the event will be observed simultaneously by all UN country members.

The Dangerous Drugs Board chose Bacolod as host after learning from a national newspaper that the city is the “most livable city” in the Philippines.

Around 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the event.

Nessia also said he has already met with elementary and high school principals of the Department of Education Bacolod City Division to ask them to send their students as delegates.

The event secretariat is also expecting participation from national agencies like the Philippines National Police, private schools, religious sectors, and local government units (LGUs), among others.

The LGUs of Makati, Pasay, Parañaque, Quezon, San Pedro, Laguna and Tanjay, Rizal have already confirmed their attendance.

Part of the program will be the contest for the biggest and most colorful delegation, as well as the poster and slogan making contest for elementary and high school students in Bacolod City. Winners will receive cash prizes.

On Dec. 7, 1987, the United Nations drafted Resolution No. 42-112 to observe June 26 as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking./PN
