MANILA – Bacolodnon Arielle Estranero is set to play a key role for the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament, which is set to open Feb. 4.
The University of St. La Salle Bacolod alumna Estranero will not only serve as the Lady Maroons’ new starting setter but has also been tapped by head coach Jerry Yee as the team captain.
Aside from Estranero, another Bacolodnon made it to the Lady Maroons’ 14-woman lineup in Jessma Ramos, who will play the middle blocker despite having only three fingers on her right hand.
Leading the way for the Lady Maroons’ campaign are veterans Katharice Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and Princess Gaiser, who will all be playing their final UAAP season with the squad.
Also making it to the Lady Maroons’ final 14-woman roster are Isabel Molde, Justine Dorog, Diana Carlos, Mae Basarte, Caryl Sandoval, Rem Cailing, and rookie Aiesha Lane Gannaban.
After missing the semifinals of the UAAP for 12-straight years, the Lady Maroons snapped the drought in Season 78 when it finished at fourth place following the good showing of its rookies and veterans.
“We are determined to do better than our performance last year,” said Yee. “Madami kaming natutunan during our experiences last year and we hope to use that in the upcoming UAAP season.”/PN
