BACOLOD City – The City of Bago, Negros Occidental, commemorated the 128th anniversary of Al Cinco de Noviembre on November 5 with a series of activities honoring the bravery and patriotism of Negrense revolutionaries, highlighted by the launch of an illustrated children’s book about local hero General Juan Araneta.

The 20-page publication, titled Libro ni Tan Juan, aims to preserve Bago’s historical heritage and introduce Araneta’s life and contributions to younger generations.

Mayor Mayette Javellana described the book as a meaningful gift to the Araneta family and the people of Bago, noting that its publication had long been one of her aspirations and was finally realized under her administration.

She said the initiative seeks to encourage Bagonhon children to learn about their local hero, understand his role in the province’s struggle for freedom, and appreciate the sacrifices of their forefathers.

Javellana emphasized that presenting Araneta’s story through an illustrated children’s book would make local history more accessible and inspire the younger generation to uphold the values of courage and patriotism.

Written and illustrated by a Bagonhon, the publication also highlights the city’s efforts to support local creativity while preserving its historical identity.

Another educational initiative presented during the celebration was Estorya sang Al Cinco de Noviembre, an animated film depicting the historic uprising to make the story more engaging and understandable to children.

The commemoration began with a Holy Mass at St. John the Baptist Church at 7 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying and floral offering at the General Juan Araneta Monument in honor of the revolutionary leader and his fellow freedom fighters.

A civic-military parade featuring uniformed personnel, schools, civic organizations and other groups then proceeded along the city’s major streets, accompanied by the traditional Sigabong sang mga Kanyon.

The festivities also featured the Rhythms of Freedom Drum and Lyre Invitational Competition at MYTMCCC, showcasing the talents of young performers while promoting discipline, unity and patriotism.

Bago observes Al Cinco de Noviembre in commemoration of the historic November 5, 1898 uprising, when Araneta and fellow Negrense revolutionaries led the movement against Spanish colonial rule.

The uprising remains a defining moment in Negros Occidental’s history, symbolizing the unity, courage and determination of Negrenses in their fight for freedom.

November 5 is observed as a special non-working holiday in Negros Occidental under Republic Act No. 6709.

Javellana called on Bagonhons to continue cherishing their heritage and carrying forward the spirit of courage, unity and love of country demonstrated by their revolutionary forefathers./PN
