ILOILO – A 54-year-old balikbayan lost pieces of jewelry and cash to four swindlers at the public market of Leganes town.

Dorris Bandiango of Brgy. Luca, Ajuy town reported to the Leganes police station she was tricked by three women and a man.

They supposedly brought her jewelry worth P245,000 and paid her in cash.

But when Bandiango opened the bag she was told contained the money, it was filled only with bundles of newspapers cut to the size of peso bills.

The victim said she also lost P1,500 cash to the swindlers.

The swindling happened around 8 a.m., Bandiango told Senior Insp. Cyril Octavio, Leganes police chief.

After attending Mass, a woman befriended her, recalled the victim, and sweet-talked her into a business partnership with another woman and a man.

There, the victim was convinced to give up her jewels to the swindlers, and they arranged for another meeting later in the day in Ajuy.

The swindlers, however, did not show up in Ajuy, leaving Bandiango holding the bag containing cut newspapers.

Bandiango was at a loss to explain why she allowed the strangers to trick her./PN
