MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will start printing official ballots for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
“We will start printing the ballots on Wednesday,” Comelec chairman Andres Bautista said yesterday.
But printing will not go full-scale as Comelec awaits the final decision on whether or not to postpone the Oct. 23 polls.
“I cannot ascertain the speed of printing. Definitely it won’t be full-blast printing,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said.
“But we need to start. We need to calibrate the machines to know how the paper would run and estimate the needed ink,” he added.
Comelec aims to print some 77 million ballots for the October elections.
With uncertainty surrounding the election schedule, Comelec will not yet print ballots for southern and hinterland areas – contrary to the usual practice of printing ballots for these areas first.
“Baka hindi muna tayo mag-print [for] Mindanao,” pending a public hearing on election postponement in the southern major island, Jimenez said.
If Congress postpones the election, “whatever ballot that has been printed will be stored and (hoped to be) repurposed for the next elections kung kailan man ito matutuloy,” the Comelec official said. (PNA)
