MANILA – Chris Banchero drained a game-winning triple to help the Alaska Aces escape with an 81-79 win over the Meralco Bolts in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

With the Bolts holding to a 79-78 lead after a conversion by rookie Jonathan Grey, the Aces responded with Banchero scoring a three from the right flank with 4.1 seconds left in the match.

Banchero finished the match with nine points for the Aces, which tallied its second consecutive win to improve to a 2-2 win-loss slate to a tie with the Bolts, TNT Katropa, Phoenix Fuel Masters, and Star Hotshots.

Vic Manuel led the way with double-double 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Aces, which notched the victory despite playing without injured centers Joachim Thoss and Siverino Baclao on Wednesday night.

The Bolts was seemed headed for a victory after being up 77-68 with two minutes remaining in the game, but the Aces uncorked 10 straight points from RJ Jazul, Jvee Casio and Manuel to snatch the lead at 78-77 with 27 ticks left.

Meralco regained the lead with 15.1 left in the game after an uncompleted three-point play by Grey. But the Aces completed its 11-2 finishing run with a gutsy triple by Banchero, overcoming Grey’s defense.

“Down by nine in the last two minutes, I told the guys, ‘Hey, we have time. One at a time. We’ve done this before,’” said Aces head coach Alex Compton. “And what a time for Jvee, RJ and Chris to step up and make those three-point shots.”

Chris Newsome led the way with 23 points, while Clifford Hodge and Negrense Reynel Hugnatan had 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the Bolts, which was on a two-game winning run before the loss./PN
