BACOLOD City – Militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in the Negros Island (Bayan-Negros) condemned President Rodrigo Duterte’s warning of a “revolutionary government” to fend off critics of his administration.
Duterte issued the warning on state television on Oct. 13 against the press, European lawmakers and other critics of his war on drugs, which left thousands dead and led rights group to warn of crimes against humanity.
Duterte said these groups are “destabilizing his government.”
Bayan-Negros secretary-general Christian Tuayon said Duterte’s warning was “nothing new” to them.
Tuayon claimed that the President’s pronouncement was meant to “condition the minds” of the public, like what he did when he planned to put Mindanao under martial law.
“The real essence of creating a revolutionary government is the transformation to a new system that is beneficial to the greater majority,” Tuayon said.
Tuayon – who is a critic of federalism in the country – believed in case Duterte’s administration transforms into a revolutionary government, the President can do “whatever he wants at the expense of democracy.”
Tuayon added that Duterte wants to be a dictator and the formation of a revolutionary government is only his cover.
“He wants total control over the government,” Tuayon explained.
Meanwhile, Rolando Rillo, regional chairman of the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers, said Duterte is “slowly placing the country under a pseudo military junta.”
Rillo said Duterte’s administration has the most number of former military officers holding key positions.
Rillo claimed that this translates to the militarization of the government./PN
