BACOLOD City – Cause-oriented groups under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayn in the Negros Island (Bayan-Negros) are preparing to welcome President Rodrigo Duterte with a protest when he arrives in the city tomorrow.
Duterte will be in the city to attend the highlights of the 38th MassKara Festival.
The exact time of the President’s arrival cannot be determined yet, according to City Administrator John Orola.
Bayan-Negros new secretary-general Michael Concepcion said their protest is against the “anti-poor policies” of Duterte’s administration.
Concepcion, however, did not disclose the details of their planned demonstration.
“Duterte is an insecure dictator who does not recognize the right for peaceful dissent and the freedom for peaceful assembly and expression,” Concepcion said.
Duterte recently tagged cause-oriented groups as allies of the New People’s Army in destabilizing the government.
“It is our rights under the Constitution to express our dissenting opinion to policies of the government that affects the poor and the underprivileged,” Concepcion added.
About 3,000 Bayan-Negros members went to Cebu province for a four-day Lakabayn Visayas. They are expected to return to Negros Occidental today./PN
