MANILA – The San Miguel Beermen struggled to blow past a shorthanded Alaska Aces, 93-88, in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

With the score tied at 88-all and just under a minute to go in the match, the Beermen leaned on free throws by RR Garcia and Marcio Lassiter to surge ahead 92-88. Another freebie by Chris Ross following missed attempts by the Aces sealed the win for the Beermen.

June Mar Fajardo led the way with double-double 22 points and 23 rebounds for the Beermen, which tied second placer TNT Katropa and Blackwater Elite with a 2-1 win-loss slate.

Arwind Santos chipped in 16 markers, while Lassiter and Garcia contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the defending champions Beermen, which played without injured Alex Cabagnot.

Despite suiting up with only 10 active players, the Aces still went on a strong start behind Jvee Casio, Anthony Dela Cruz and Jaypee Mendoza to build a 53-44 lead at halftime.

The Beermen began its move in the third frame behind Fajardo and Gabby Espinas to take a 64-63 lead. The Aces quickly answered back to retake a 68-64 upperhand but the Beermen kept it close at 72-70.

In the final quarter, the Aces surged to a 77-70 lead following a triple by Dondon Hontiveros but the Beermen answered back behind Fajardo and Santos for an 86-85 edge.

The Aces tied the score at 86 via a split free throw by Casio before Santos and Aces’ Carl Bryan Cruz exchanged hits for an 88-88 deadlock. The Beermen then went on a 5-0 finishing run to complete the come-from-behind win./PN
