WHEN you hear the word ā€œmanagerā€ what comes into your head?

Do you imagine a stuck-up, eternally judgmental monster? Someone whose presence you donā€™t deserve to stand in? Or someone who you respect and feel comfortable around?

I am still a reasonably new player in the professional world. Just eight months and counting to be exact. However, I have been exposed to different kinds of people on top. Iā€™ve met managers who are bosses and managers who are leaders. What exactly is the difference between the two?

Arenā€™t bosses still technically our leaders? Well thereā€™s a difference with the way they handle people and situations. Bosses depend on fear to govern their people. All that they do is tell their people what to do and receive the praises for any achievement. If anything goes wrong, all that they do is blame and demand a resolution. The number one priority of a boss is making sure he gets the credit for the work his people do.

A leader, on the other hand, is different. Leaders depend on trust and cooperation to get things done. They serve as role models for those under them rather than a dictator. They care for the general well-being of their people. They are not afraid to get up off their swivel chairs and help with the dirty work and if anything goes wrong, they work to find a solution rather than throw blame around.

Thatā€™s why thought leaders make more efficient managers. People feel happy and appreciated when they see their superiors also getting involved with the work.

Respect is earned, not demanded and leaders gain the respect of those under them. Itā€™s like the inherent sense of loyalty you have to your family and friends, those who have been with you through thick and thin. There is a sense of trust between the manager and those under him that makes work more effective.
