I REMEMBER Rev. Fr. Hernando Coja, OAR, my favorite Recollect priest at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. His encouragement and support enabled writers to come up with textbooks, products of our many years of our teaching experience. These were Dr. Cris Diego, Dr. Jane Uy and Mrs. Libertad Chua.

As a UNO-Rian, in some serious instances, I used to approach Fr. Cojak (as we fondly call him) and he never ran out of jokes that made me smile through tears. One time he told me, “Don’t forget, there is no resurrection without crucifixion.”

Indeed, true. In all pains I bore, there is an assurance of resurrection as long as we cling to Him. No need of texting, Facebook or e-mail.

Father Bernard Amparado, OAR, likewise always reminds me of humility. He was the UNO-Recoletos president then, and I was a dean. When there was misconception and misunderstanding, that one time I cried because of condemnation without hearing my side. Beyond my expectation, Fr. Amparado sent me a five-page handwritten letter asking for apology.

These two priests may not be perfect but I always remember their simple gestures of humility and examples of true priesthood. Happy Easter, Fathers and all the believers of the true meaning of the Lenten season. (delsocorrodaquila@gmail.com/PN
