BACOLOD City – The Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) made sure that security features were embedded and considered in the production of the recently introduced New Generation Currency (NGC) coins.
BSP-Bacolod deputy director Joanne Marie Castelo said they have already started distributing the NGC coins to banks in the city.
The BSP enhanced the design and the wear and corrosion-resistance capabilities of the NGC coins for better security features, said Castelo, who is also BSP-Bacolod’s new branch head.
The P10 and P5 coins have micro-printed details which were made using laser engraving technology.
It protects the integrity of the coins, making it hard to duplicate using the traditional counterfeiting method.
The metallic composition of NGC coins also discourages the illegal practice of hoarding large quantities of coins for the extraction of metal contents.
The NGC coins are made of nickel plated steel and not of any precious metal.
The P10 coin is 27 millimeter in diameter and edged with BSP lettering.
The P5 coin, meanwhile, is 25 millimeter in diameter and has smooth plain edging.
The P1 coin has intermittent reeds in the edges and is 23 millimeter in diameter.
The P.25 coin is 20 millimeter in diameter and has a smooth edging while the P.5 and P.1 coins are 16 millimeter and 15 millimeter in diameter, respectively.
BSP-Bacolod bank officer II Dori Mae Cañeso said the NGC coins need visual and tactile familiarization. (With a report from the Philippine Information Agency/PN)
