KALIBO, Aklan – The “Big One,” or also known as the strongest earthquake yet feared to hit the country may not only happen in Metro Manila.

According to Galo Ibardolaza, executive officer of the Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), the earthquake may also hit Aklan because of the West Panay Fault.

Nobody knows when the “Big One” will happen, according to Ibardolaza, because the time and the place cannot be determined, unlike storms which have forecast.

The West Panay Fault, according to him, is very near the boundary of Aklan and Antique, Iloilo and Capiz, and ends in Anini-y town, Antique.

Kalibo is only 23 kilometers away from the nearest portion of West Panay Fault.

Aklan was hit by a strong earthquake in 1990 which damaged the Kalibo Cathedral and Libacao Church.

Meanwhile, with the recent opening of classes, the Department of Science and Technology and Department of Education have come up with a primer for teachers to teach earthquake safety in schools.

Through the primer, teachers will show pupils what to do during and after an earthquake.

According to the primer, when a strong shaking starts, pupils must protect themselves by staying away from falling objects; getting under the table and do the “duck, cover and hold”; and as soon as the shaking stops, pupils should leave the building immediately in an orderly manner by walking and to refrain from running, pushing and talking.

The pupils must then proceed to the identified evacuation area. (PIA)
