KALIBO, Aklan – A bill seeking to establish a fisheries center in Aklan is pending action in Senate.

It was on May 29 when House Bill 7491 was transmitted to the Senate – a day after the House Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources approved it on its third and final reading.

The bill aims to create a provincial fisheries center that will serve as a hub for aquatic studies and fisheries training, development and production.

While the bill wants to tap state colleges and universities in Aklan, it also recommends the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to supervise the proposed center.

Marquez said the proposed center will provide technical assistance to Aklan’s fisherfolk, especially on new technology for innovative and sustainable breeding and hatchery of high-value marine species.

The proposed center will also promote local fisheries and aquatic products, and provide marketing and product distribution assistance to fisherfolk communities.

It will cater to the operation of government-operated sanctuaries, seaweed processing plants and nurseries, and mariculture development park facilities. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
