ILOILO City – St. Roberts International Academy Panda Rockets opened its campaign in the 2017 Bingawan Foundation Cup Regional High School Basketball with a 93-78 win over Hercor College Junior Jaguars on Saturday at Bingawan, Iloilo covered court.
Kevin Barranco led the way with 22 points for the SM NBTC Regional Champions Panda Rockets, which was still pumped up from its third-place finish in the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball League (Mayor’s Cup – 1st Conference).
Holding to a slim 45-41 advantage at the half, Panda Rockets relied on the hot shooting of Barranco in the second half toward its largest lead at 15 points in the fourth.
The John Guanco-mentored Panda Rockets tightened its defense from start to finish to neutralize the huge size advantage of the reigning Capiz champions Junior Jaguars.
The Foundation Cup resumes this afternoon with a lone match between Mayor’s Cup runner-up CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights and Bingawan National High School at 4:30 p.m.
Other teams in the tournament were Santa Clarita International School Silver Knights, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Assumption-Passi, University of San Agustin, Ateneo De Iloilo, and AMA University.
The Bingawan Foundation Cup is presented by Mayor Mark Plagata Palabrica, Vice Mayor Matt Palabrica, local officials, Municipal Tourism Council, Municipal Physical Fitness and Sports Development Council, and Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Council./PN
