ILOILO City – The position papers of two business groups from Negros Occidental and Bacolod City on the proposed daily wage increase will be presented during a public consultation today.
Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) Western Visayas secretary Atty. Ma. Ailyne Valaquio said they received counter-proposals from the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) and the Confederation of Planters Association in Negros.
MBCCI is presenting a different structure based on a business’ employee size while the Confederation of Planters Association in Negros also has its own recommendations.
The series of public consultations stemmed from a petition for wage hike submitted by the Philippine Agricultural and Commercial Workers Union (PACWU), an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) based in Negros Occidental.
However, with the uncertainty of the status of the Negros Island Region (NIR) where Negros Occidental belongs, Valaquio said they were advised by their central office to spearhead the conduct of consultations.
PACWU proposes to increase by P101.35 the daily wage of workers in commercial establishments with more than 10 employees, P90.61 a day for plantations with more than 24 hectares of land and P86.87 per day for non-plantations and plantations with an area of 24 hectares and below.
Currently, the minimum wage in Western Visayas is P265.60 for commercial, agricultural and non-agricultural establishments with 10 workers and below, and P298.50 for those with more than 10 employees.
For agriculture workers both in plantations and non-plantations, the daily minimum wage is Php266.50.
After Iloilo, the next consultation will be held on Nov. 16 in Roxas City and Boracay Island on Nov. 17.
Prior to today’s hearing, a consultation was done in Negros Occidental.
After the Boracay consultation, the board will convene to deliberate whether to grant the petition or not. (PNA/PN)
