BACOLOD City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Negros Island Region launched its Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program at the Jose Torres Elementary School in Barangay Singcang-Airport.
The campaign was in line with Masa Masid, a community-based anticrime program of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, according to Superintendent Larry Fuentes, BJMP Negros provincial administrator.
“We go to schools where we start drug abuse prevention,” he said.
Senior Superintendent Amelito Fuentes, BJMP Negros deputy director for administration, said their activity was also in line with their role in taking custody of and rehabilitating detainees, including drug offenders.
“We took this initiative to strengthen the national government’s effort in combating drug abuse down to the school level,” he said.
Of the 6,456 inmates in Negros Island Region as of January this year, 3,154 were drug offenders.
In this capital city, the detention facility in Barangay Taculing houses 854 inmates, 551 of whom were facing drug-related charges.
On the other hand, 164 of the 543 male inmates in the Barangay Handumanan jail were drug offenders, while there were 123 drug offenders among the 163 female detainees.
Speaking at the launch on Feb. 3, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran appealed to the parents to closely monitor their children. Students and teachers were also present.
The DARE program lecture on Friday last week was the first of a series that will be done in four Fridays at the same school./PN
