BORACAY – Police shot a 22-year-old drug suspect in a sting operation in Barangay Balabag.
Motorcycle driver Darwin Bartolome of Sitio Bulabog tried to shoot the pursuing officers but his gun did not fire, police claimed.
At the same time, one of the officers fired at Bartolome, hitting the suspect on the right knee and left thigh.
Bartolome tried to escape after selling two sachets of shabu to an undercover officer for P2,000 around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
“The suspect ran away when he learned his customer was a policeman,” said Senior Inspector Jess Baylon, chief of the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center.
Bartolome tried to hide in a residential compound near Mt. Luho.
“The officers told the suspect, ‘We’re the police,’ but the latter refused to stop,” Baylon said.
Bartolome drew out a .38 revolver and fired at the police, but the gun jammed. That was when one of the officers shot him using a .9mm pistol.
“This shows the police are following operational procedures in neutralizing drug suspects,” Baylon said.
Uniformed policemen and Boracay Action Group responders brought Bartolome to a medical clinic in the village. He was later transferred to the provincial hospital in Kalibo, Aklan for further treatment.
Confiscated from the suspect were the homemade revolver with four live bullets and the buy-bust money.
“Bartolome is in our new list of drug personalities,” said Baylon.
A few hours earlier, another drug suspect was arrested in Barangay Manoc-manoc.
Operatives from the Malay and Boracay police stations and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency caught 23-year-old Maribel Lubrico around 5:30 p.m.
Lubrico, a native of Midsayap, North Cotabato, sold two sachets of suspected shabu to an undercover officer for P2,000.
“We learned Lubrico tags along a group of male suspected pushers,” Baylon said. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
