MALAY, Aklan – Power interruptions in Boracay Island may be experienced for a month, according to Engr. Joel Martinez, head of the Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) engineering department.

Martinez said around 8,000 consumers experienced a series of power brownouts last week due to the transfer of electrical posts amid Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) road widening program.

“We have to transfer our electrical posts to give way to the road widening of the DPWH. This effort is part of the environmental rehabilitation of this resort island,” Martinez added.

It can be recalled that President Rodrigo Duterte closed this island to tourists last year for six months to undergo environmental rehabilitation. After the closure, another year and a half commences to continue what has been started.

“The brownouts start from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. We, in AKELCO are doing everything to immediately transfer the poles so that these will not reach the one month target,” Martinez said.
