BORACAY – Senior officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations were in this island for a three-day tabletop meeting aimed at addressing human trafficking.

The meeting, which started Tuesday and ends today, gathered at least 80 International Criminal Police Organization officials, government prosecutors and immigration officers.

Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC) senior research analyst Ilyne Galasinao said the meeting was held in the Philippines as the country was the “lead shepherd” in fighting human trafficking.

“Trafficking in person is a global scourge that contributes to the violation of human rights. Based on researches, majority of the trafficking victims are women,” said Galasinao.

The number of men and children who fall victims to human trafficking is also increasing, said Bruce Kelly, team leader of the Australia-Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons.

Kell was among the event speakers, including Jose Robert Nunez, director of the Office of Civil Defense 6; Archana Kotecha, head of the Legal Organization of Liberty Asia; Paul Buckley, regional technical assistant of the United Nations Action for Cooperation Against Trafficking in Persons; Assistant City Prosecutor Darlene Pajarito; and Jimmy Manabat, undersecretary of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission.

The meeting was also expected to discuss illegal drugs and the death of Ilongga domestic worker Joanna Daniela Demafelis, whose body was found inside a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait last month.

The PCTC and the Department of the Interior and Local Government organized the meeting./PN
