BORACAY – Treated water may soon be discharged to a wetland in Barangay Manoc-manoc.
The process will be part of Phase II of the drainage project aimed at solving perennial flooding in this island resort.
The project is a public-private partnership between the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and the Boracay Island Water Company (BIWC).
The TIEZA, an agency under the Department of Tourism (DOT), will fund the construction, while the BIWC, a subsidiary of Manila Water Company, will take charge of maintenance and operation.
Phase II is now up for bidding.
It involves the building of a pipeline in Sitio Bulabog, Barangay Balabag that will allow for the discharge of treated water to a wetland in Sitio Lugutan, Barangay Manoc-manoc — not to Bulabog Beach anymore.
Construction work starts once the bidding process is completed, said BIWC operations head Jennifer Vergara.
Phase I was designed to solve flooding within the 11-hectare central business district in the island. It was completed in August 2014.
In 2016, a multipartite agreement aimed at ensuring the proper implementation of Phase I was signed.
Signatories included TIEZA, BIWC, local government of Malay, provincial government of Aklan, DOT, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Boracay, Boracay Foundation, Inc., and Boracay Windsport Association, Inc. (PNA)
