Boxing: Negrense Palicte nets silver Thailand Open

James Melos Palicte of Bago City, Negros Occidental shows his silver medal after his finale match in the 1st Thailand Open International Boxing 2018 in Bangkok.

MANILA – Negrense amateur boxer James Melos Palicte settled for a silver medal finish in the 1st Thailand Open International Boxing 2018 in Bangkok.

Palicte, a native of Bago City, Negros Occidental, failed to pull off an upset in the knockout finals of the 60kg lightweight division after a decision loss to hometown pug Anu Seetep.

Palicte defeated Battumur Misheelt of Mongolia via default in the semifinals and Kimura Rentario of Japan via split decision in the quarterfinals en route to the gold medal round on July 6.

While Palicte failed to go all the way, his national team teammate Carlo Paalam captured the gold medal in the light flyweight division finale, beating Ahmadisafa Omid of Iran.

Before reaching the championship round, Paalam eliminated Japan’s Ryusei Matsumoto, Thailand’s Samak Saehan and Chinese Taipei’s Tu Po Wei.

Sugar Ray Ocana took home the bronze in light welterweight after losing to Wuttichai Masuk of Thailand in the semifinals while Marvin Tabamo also won silver in flyweight after bowing to Thailand’s Kritiphak Duangnuch.

Meanwhile Mario Fernandez failed to reach the medal round after being ousted by Mongolia’s Enkh Amar Kharkhuu. Joel Bacho also bowed out in the elimination round, losing to a Thai foe.

The Philippine delegation finished the tournament with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals./PN
