GUIMARAS – A three-year-old boy died after he was ran over by a grader in Barangay Umilig, Buenavista town around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29.
According to Police Captain Rene Mercado, chief of the Buenavista Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred when a Yamaha Aerox motorcycle, being driven uphill by alias “Carl”, the child’s father, accidentally ran over a fallen coconut, causing him to lose control. The impact threw the child from the motorcycle and onto the opposite lane, where he was fatally hit by an oncoming grader.
The child was reportedly seated in front of the motorcycle while Carl’s live-in partner, alias “May”, rode at the back. All riders were wearing helmets, but the child’s position made him vulnerable to the accident, police added.
On the other hand, the grader was being driven downhill by alias “Sidro,” 42, a resident of Barangay Lawi, Jordan town.
Initial investigation suggests that due to the slope and positioning of the motorcycle, the grader driver may not have seen the child on the road in time to stop.
The child sustained fatal head injuries and was rushed to the Buenavista District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
The parents of the victim have expressed their intent to file a formal complaint against the grader driver.
Sidro, meanwhile, voluntarily surrendered to the police. He is set to face charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide./PN
