Consumers in the Visayas faced power interruptions anew on Friday, August 7, as tight supply persists amid coal plant outages and limited imports from Mindanao.
In an advisory, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas under red alert again on Friday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The grid was also under yellow alert from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
As of 8 a.m., the available capacity was 2,360 megawatts (MW), while the peak demand was 2,348 MW.
In a yellow alert, the power supply can still meet demand, but it will serve as a warning that when a plant breaks down one way or another, it will result in brownouts. A red alert, meanwhile, means that supply is no longer sufficient to meet demand. Unmanaged demand could trigger brownouts. (Lisbet K. Esmael © Philippine Daily Inquirer)
