MANILA – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Friday declined to comment on the arrest of former Foreign Affairs Secretary and Banco Filipino Savings and Mortgages Bank (Banco Filipino) director Perfecto Yasay Jr.

“The service of the warrant of arrest against Perfecto R. Yasay Jr. is a consequence of the filing of criminal information by the Department of Justice before the court. A judge issued the said warrant pursuant to the provisions of the Rules of Court,” the BSP said in a statement.

“The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will not issue any comment as the matter is pending before court and to do so would violate sub judice rule,” it added.

On Friday, Yasay was ordered released by the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 10 after he posted bail worth P240,000.

Manila Police District members arrested on Thursday Yasay in his residence in Makati city by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by the court in relation to a criminal case filed against him and several Banco Filipino officials.

He was rushed to a hospital after he complained of difficulty in breathing.

The case, filed in April 2011, stemmed from an alleged anomalous P350 million loan the bank extended to Tierrasud Incorporated, which operates under Tierrasud Corporation.

Yasay and some Banco Filipino officials are accused of violation of several BSP laws for their failure to report the said loan to the BSP.

On a Facebook post, Yasay claimed that the crime happened between 2003 to 2006 while he joined the bank in 2009.(PNA)
