BSP urges Ilonggos to save, budget for financial security amid economic uncertainties

ILOILO City — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is urging Ilonggos to make saving and budgeting a daily habit, emphasizing that financial discipline is key to securing their future and preparing for emergencies, life milestones, and economic uncertainties.

The appeal comes as the BSP marks Savings Consciousness Week 2026 with the theme, “Mag-ipon ngayon para sa panatag na bukas,” while intensifying its campaign to improve financial literacy and encourage Filipinos to build stronger financial resilience through regular saving and responsible budgeting.

“We encourage everyone to make saving a habit. Every peso saved today is a step toward a more secure and brighter tomorrow,” the BSP said in a statement.

The BSP outlined four practical steps toward effective saving:

* First, set clear and realistic savings goals, determine how long you intend to save, and decide how much to set aside every month.

* Second, monitor your income and expenses by listing all sources of income, including salaries, business earnings, or remittances, and comparing them with regular expenses such as loan payments and daily necessities.

* Third, determine your actual saving capacity after deducting expenses and financial obligations from your total income.

* Fourth, develop an action plan by adjusting spending habits, savings targets, or income sources to help achieve financial goals.

In information, education, and communication (IEC) materials released to Panay News, the BSP explained that saving is essential in preparing for major life events such as education, employment, home ownership, marriage, entrepreneurship, raising a family, and retirement.

It also stressed the importance of maintaining emergency funds for unexpected situations, including illnesses, accidents, calamities, epidemics, unemployment, and death.

The central bank continues to promote what it calls the correct saving formula — “Income – Savings = Expenses” — encouraging Filipinos to save first before spending while prioritizing needs over wants.

To ensure safety, liquidity, and potential interest earnings, the BSP encourages the public to keep their savings in banks through products such as basic deposit accounts, regular savings accounts, time deposits, and checking accounts.

Other savings options include savings and credit cooperatives, self-help groups, savings and loan associations, and selected non-financial assets.

Alongside saving, the BSP is also advocating proper budgeting.

According to the central bank, budgeting means telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. It involves organizing income and expenses, prioritizing financial goals, implementing a spending plan, monitoring financial progress, and revising budgets as circumstances change.

The BSP said budgeting enables individuals to stay focused on important financial goals, detect potential financial problems early, and prepare for future financial challenges before they become crises.

Among the budgeting techniques recommended by the BSP are reverse budgeting, the 50/30/20 balance budgeting rule, and the envelope budgeting system.

The central bank also acknowledged common obstacles to budgeting, including lack of motivation, insufficient family support, temptations, fear of missing out (FOMO), and the “You Only Live Once” (YOLO) mindset.

To overcome these challenges, it encourages Filipinos to use budgeting tools, involve family members in financial planning, stay focused on long-term goals, and practice financial discipline./PN
