ILOILO – The municipality of Calinog closed its border with Lambunao town.

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the other day that a 70-year-old resident of Lambunao tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19),

Mayor Francisco Calvo ordered the border closed beginning yesterday morning in Executive Order (EO) No. 029 “until further notice.”

The goal is to keep Calinog free from COVID-19.

“Gusto naton proteksyonan ang aton mga constituents,” Calvo told Panay News.

As of last night, Iloilo province had five confirmed cases.

The 70-year-old Lambunao man with COVID-19 died on Sunday night, according to DOH Region 6.

He had no history of travel to an area with COVID-19 cases but may have been exposed to someone with such travel history.

Under EO 29, vehicles and people from Lambunao – or have passed by Lambunao – are barred from entering Calinog.Also, anyone is free to leave Calinog but would be barred from returning.

There are, however, exemptions. These are the following:

* healthcare workers

* government officials and employees

* peace and order officers

* humanitarian and emergency service

* delivery of basic needs and facilities

* bantay or caregivers of patients at the Dr. Ricardo S. Provido Sr. Memorial District Hospital, but they must undergo disinfection

“Due to the increasing number of localized transmission of COVID-19 in the country, the local government unit of Calinog sees the need to raise the level of quarantine procedures and control measures in the municipality,” read part of Calvo’s EO.

Calinog has five barangays bordering Lambunao (Carvasana, Tabucan, Ipil, Badu, and Tigbayog). Officials there have been told to seal their areas from the adjacent town.

Calinog also shares borders with Bingawan town and Passi City. Calvo said people from these areas wanting to enter Calinog must present an enhanced community quarantine pass.

As of March 30, Western Visayas has a total of 18 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.

These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth./PN
