MANILA — Defending champion National University flexed its title form early, as rookie sensation Sam Cantada delivered another breakout performance to power the Lady Bulldogs to a 25-23, 25-19, 28-26 sweep of Adamson University in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
With the victory, NU surged to solo first place with a pristine 2-0 record, keeping its bid for a third straight championship firmly on track.
Cantada once again proved she is ready for the collegiate spotlight, firing 16 points built on 13 attacks, two service aces, and a block. The 18-year-old outside spiker also showcased her all-around game with nine excellent receptions and five excellent digs.
The rookie from Dasmariñas, Cavite, who previously suited up for Adamson at the high school level, rose to the occasion against familiar faces, including Shaina Nitura, Abby Segui, and Fhei Sagaysay, in their first collegiate showdown.
Cantada’s latest performance came on the heels of her 21-point explosion against University of Santo Tomas in her debut, cementing her early-season role as one of NU’s primary offensive weapons.
Negrense Arah Panique added 13 markers on nine attacks and four blocks, providing crucial support as the Lady Bulldogs held their composure in a tightly contested third set to complete the straight-sets win.
Adamson dropped to a 1-1 mark despite a strong showing from Shaina Nitura, who finished with 18 points, seven excellent receptions, and six excellent digs. Frances Mordi chipped in 17 markers for the Lady Falcons.
In the men’s division, the NU Bulldogs likewise imposed their dominance, handing Adamson a lopsided 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 defeat as they continued their quest for a sixth consecutive crown.
Leo Ordiales led the charge with 16 points on 11 attacks, three blocks, and two aces, along with three excellent digs. Michaelo Buddin added 15 points and 10 excellent receptions, while Jade Disquitado tallied 11 markers on nine attacks and five excellent receptions.
Congolese middle blocker Obed Mukaba, given more opportunities after a scoreless outing against FEU, responded with seven points on five attacks, one block, and one ace as NU completed a dominant double sweep over Adamson./PN
