Capitol produces summa, magna, cum laude grads

ILOILO – Seventy-nine college scholars of the provincial government are graduating this month.

One of them would be graduating with the highest honor – summa cum laude.

She is Karen Gardose of Barangay Agtabo, Passi City and a student of Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics at the West Visayas State University (WVSU) in La Paz, Iloilo City.

Of the 79 graduating scholars, 10 are from Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State University (NIPSC), 14 from Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U), 27 from WVSU, six from the Iloilo State College of Fisheries (ISCOF), five from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV; graduating this June), and 17 from New Lucena Polytechnic College (NLPC).

Six of the scholars are graduating magna cum laude. They are the following:

* Aliyah Jesena of Maasin town – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at WVSU

* Glenda Palmes of Barangay Banguit, Cabatuan – Bachelor in Special Education at WVSU-Main

* Christian Jay Ponsica of Barangay Managayapa, Banate – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at WVSU

* Jessa Senope of Barangay Tabucan, Barotac Nuevo – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at WVSU

* Emerielle Kaye Sorolla of Barangay Cabilauan, New Lucena – Bachelor of Science in Biology at WVSU

* Mellisa Suganob of Barangay Sulanga, Cabatuan – Bachelor of Science in Forestry at WVSU Lambunao

Eighteen scholars are graduating cum laude.

According to Alma Ravena, assistant department head of the provincial government’s Human Resource Management and Development Office, the number of graduating scholars could still rise.

Courses covered by the provincial government’s college scholarship program for poor but deserving Ilonggos include Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Cooperative Development, Education, Information Technology, Accounting, and Management, among other social science courses.

For school year 2018-2019, scholars of the provincial government would be receiving the following:

* monthly stipend of P3,500 (from P2,500 monthly previously)

* book allowance of P2,000 per semester (from P1,000 per semester previously)

* clothing allowance of P1,000 per semester (from P1,000 per year  previously)

According to Ravena, the provincial government hopes to support the educational needs of 125 poor but deserving college students for school year 2018-2019 – 25 scholars in each of the five districts of the province.

Applicants for the scholarship must meet the following qualifications:

* senior high school graduates belonging to the upper 10 percent of the graduating class

* with annual gross family income of not more than P150,000

* must be a bona fide resident of the province of Iloilo

* must enroll in any state university or college in the province of Iloilo/PN
