CAPIZ — An 18-year-old track and field athlete from Pontevedra, Capiz delivered a standout performance at the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2026, setting a new record in the 100-meter sprint.
Angel Villagracia, a native of Barangay Sulo, clocked 12.22 seconds in the 100-meter dash during the regional meet held in Passi City, Iloilo, beginning March 17, breaking the previous mark and making history for the Capiz delegation.
Villagracia entered the competition aiming not only to win but also to secure her fourth gold medal and earn a slot in the prestigious Palarong Pambansa, the country’s premier multi-sport event for student-athletes.
She rose to the challenge, capturing three gold medals in total — in the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, and 200-meter dash — cementing her status as one of the meet’s top performers.
Her strong showing also secured her qualification for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa, where she will compete against the nation’s best young athletes.
Villagracia attributed her success to the unwavering support of her parents, Josephine and Albert Villagracia, as well as her coaches, Realyn Bangero and Rey Anthony Albason, who have guided her training and development.
“Since I was young, I’ve always dreamed of becoming a champion in my sport to show Mama and Papa that all the money they’ve spent on me wasn’t wasted,” she shared in a Facebook post.
“And now, I’ve finally achieved that dream. I’m so thankful to God for granting it. There were times I doubted myself, but He never let me give up,” she added.
Local officials also highlighted the role of grassroots sports development in nurturing athletes like Villagracia. The Provincial Government of Capiz, under Governor Fredenil H. Castro, continues to support programs aimed at improving training facilities and providing opportunities for young athletes to excel.
Villagracia’s achievement stands as a source of pride for Capiz and an inspiration to aspiring athletes, underscoring the value of discipline, perseverance, and community support in reaching one’s goals./PN
